12. Comets are essentially balls of ice and dust that streak through the solar system. When they approach the Sun, the intense radiation converts some of the ice to gas, which, apparently as a result of several processes, ionizes very rapidly. The solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field force the ionized gas to stream behind the comet, forming the familiar comet's tail.

Meteoroids are smaller chunks of rock in space. When they enter our atmosphere they start to burn, and are called meteors. Meteors streak across the sky, blazing bright for only a few seconds.
