1 Luna walking Feather vs. hammer Golf

2 Moon Size Fifth largest among planetary satellites
Over one-fourth the size of the earth. Distance The average distance between Earth and the Moon is about 250,000 miles Brightness Next to the sun, the full moon is the brightest object in the heavens.

3 Interesting facts How long does it take the Moon to orbit the Earth?
The Moon takes about 27 days to go all the way around What is a Lunar Month? A lunar month is the time the moon takes to pass through a complete cycle of its phases. A lunar month is about 29.5 days Why is a Lunar month (29.5 days) longer than the number of days it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth (27.3)? While the Moon is orbiting the Earth, the Earth is constantly moving because it is orbiting the sun.

4 Interesting facts cont.………..
How big is the Moon? The Moon has a diameter of 2,000 miles The surface of the Moon has about the same area as the continent of Africa. What is the surface of the Moon like? The surface of the moon has many things on it such as craters, lava plains, mountains, and valleys. surface.

5 1969 everything changes!!! Formation of the Moon
Scientists first believed that the moon formed at the same time as the Earth…..but 1969 everything changes!!!

6 Impact theory about 4.5 billion years ago between Earth and a object about the size of Mars collided creating a disk of molten rock, gas and debris that eventually formed the moon

7 Front and rear images of Luna…… Notice anything interesting?

8 Phases Phases The phases of the moon are caused by the relative positions of the earth, sun, and moon. The moon goes around the earth, on average, in 27 days 7 hours 43 minutes. The sun always illuminates the half of the moon facing the sun When the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the earth, the moon appears "full" to us. When the moon is between the earth and the sun, it appears dark, a "new" moon. In between, the moon's illuminated surface appears to grow (wax) to full Then decreases (wanes) to the next new moon.

Celestial Bodies Comets Asteroids Meteoroids

12 Comets are essentially balls of ice and dust that streak through the solar system. When they approach the Sun, the intense radiation converts some of the ice to gas, which, apparently as a result of several processes, ionizes very rapidly. The solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field force the ionized gas to stream behind the comet, forming the familiar comet's tail.

19 Meteoroids/Meteors/Meteorites
Meteoroids are smaller chunks of rock in space. When they enter our atmosphere they start to burn, and are called meteors. Meteors streak across the sky, blazing bright for only a few seconds. What we call "shooting stars" are actually meteors. As the Earth moves in its orbit around the Sun, it occasionally crosses the stream of dust left by a comet, and this causes a meteor shower. Sometimes meteors are large enough to survive the fiery trip through the atmosphere, and actually hit the ground. These are called meteorites. Most meteorites are small and they cause very little damage when they hit. Most of them land in water, which covers 2/3 of our planet. There are only two documented cases of a person being hit by a meteorite.

20 Meteoroid A very large number of meteoroids enter the Earth's atmosphere each day amounting to more than a hundred tons of material. But they are almost all very small, just a few milligrams each. Only the largest ones ever reach the surface to become meteorites. The largest found meteorite (Hoba, in Namibia) weighs 60 tons.

27 Asteroids

28 A good example of what happens when a small asteroid hits the Earth is Barringer Crater (a.k.a. Meteor Crater) near Winslow, Arizona. It was formed about 50,000 years ago by an iron meteor about meters in diameter. The crater is 1200 meters in diameter and 200 meters deep. About 120 impact craters have been identified on the Earth, so far
