Fitting a Line to Data A large company is expanding its workforce and needs to hire some administrative assistants. The company leadership wants to know the relationship between the amount of experience their current administrative assistants had when they were hired and their starting salary with the company. Make a prediction on what you think that relationship is before we find out.

Experience(in months)
Fitting a Line to Data The data for 10 randomly selected administrative assistants are shown below. Experience(in months) Starting Salary(in $1000) 4 25 13 34 3 22 21 10 33 7 27 38 15 35 5 26 20 36

Fitting a Line to Data Using the data in the table, construct a scatter plot. Label all axes and include the correct scales on the independent and dependent variables. (1) Once finished, does the scatter plot confirm your initial prediction. Explain your answer. (2)Also, if you were hiring a person with 17 months of experience, what would their starting salary be? Explain.

ANSWERS Using the data in the table, construct a scatter plot. Label all axes and include the correct scales on the independent and dependent variables. (1) Once finished, does the scatter plot confirm your initial prediction. Explain your answer. POSTIVE RELATIONSHIP (2)Also, if you were hiring a person with 17 months of experience, what would their starting salary be? Explain. $36,000

Answer the following questions:
Fitting a Line to Data Answer the following questions: (3) On your scatter plot, draw a LINE OF BEST FIT that best represents the relationship between your variables. (4) Use the line of best fit to predict the starting salary for an administrative assistant with 1 year of experience. (5) Use the line of best fit to write an equation in terms of y = mx + b to predict any starting experience and salary.

INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE The “Blue Book” is used by car dealers across America to determine the trade-in values of vehicles. One such factor that must be considered outside the “Blue Book” is the odometer reading. Why? The following table contains odometer readings and trade-in values for the five year cars of the same make and model. Use them to construct a scatter plot, draw a line of best fit, write an equation in terms of y = mx +b, and explain what all this means to you.
