1 Objective SWBAT describe characteristics of organisms in kingdom Protista.

2 Kingdom Protista Protista are single-celled. Protista are eukaryotes.
Unicellular Protista are eukaryotes. Their cell does have a nucleus. Some are autotrophs; some are heterotrophs. Kingdom Protista is the most diverse of the six kingdoms – there are many very different kinds of protists.

3 Check For Understanding
Which statement below correctly describes a difference between protists and and Eubacteria? Eubacteria are unicellular, but protists are multicellular. Eubacteria can be producers, but protists cannot. Eubacteria don’t have a nucleus, but protists do. Eubacteria are not alive, but protists are.

4 Euglena

5 Paramecium caudatum

6 Zooflagellate

7 Phytoplankton

8 Amoeba proteus

9 Immobile heterotrophs
Types of Protists Producers Mobile heterotrophs Immobile heterotrophs Use sun’s energy to make food through photosynthesis Contain chloroplasts Live in water Ex.: Euglena Use flagella or pseudopods to move Catch and eat or decompose organisms Cannot move Mostly decompose other organisms

10 Check For Understanding
Which statement about protists below is correct? All of them contain chloroplasts. None of them can move. Some of them can make food from sunlight. They are all heterotrophs.

11 Euglena

12 Zooflagellate

13 Amoeba proteus

14 Check For Understanding
What is something that eubacteria, archaebacteria, and protists have in common? They all have chloroplasts. They live in extremely hot and salty environments. They have a nucleus. They are unicellular.

15 Protista Cell number: Unicellular (one cell)
Cell type: Eukaryotic (have a nucleus) How does it get energy?: Autotrophs and heterotrophs Key attributes: They are the most diverse kingdom. Examples: Euglena, Paramecium, Amoeba, plankton

16 Quiz Organism Single-celled Has a nucleus Lives in hot and salty places Can contain chlorophyll 1 X 2 3 Which organism is an archaebacterium, which is a eubacterium, and which is a protist?
