What is characterization?
Developing and portraying a personality through thought, action, dialogue, costuming, and makeup.
3
Characterization involves more than just pretending to be a character in a scene or play.
It involves making others believe that you are someone else. An actor’s job is to use the mind, face, body, and voice to think, talk, act, and react like someone else.

5
STEREOTYPICAL CHARACTERS
A familiar type of character whose tag, or label, identifies a particular group or segment of society. Examples of sterotypical characters: cheerleader, cowboy, nerd Avoid negative ideas concerning occupation, race, gender, age, ethnic heritage, or religion, which result in misrepresentation in a discriminatory way.
6
OBSERVATION One of the most important skills you can develop is the ability to observe people. Observing real people in real situations will help you develop original characters.

EXTERNAL CHARACTERISTICS
Outward , visible qualities: age, gender, height, weight, hair color, skin tone, manner of dress, movements, posture. Mannerisms: habits or simple behaviors that are unconsciously repeated, such as nail biting, raising an eyebrow, or twisting a lock of hair.

VOCALIZATION *Listen to as many different voices as possible. *For each voice, notice the quality and tone , the patterns of speech, and the accent or dialect. *The illusion of a character can be totally lost if the character’s voice is not suitable. *Listen to your own voice on a recording – how would your character’s voice be the same or different?
