1 Get you thinking I didn’t like school, I didn’t learn nothin’ useful and teachers didn’t like me ‘cos I didn’t talk like them! If my kids don’t want to be there I’m not gonna make ‘em sit there for wasted years! Using the key terms we thought about yesterday consider what type of deprivation this comment might lead to according to (some) sociologists?

2 Objectives-What are we aiming for today?
By the end of the lesson you should Explain the sociological support and criticisms for the concept of cultural deprivation Define and explain cultural deprivation using its 3 strands and relevant examples & sociologists Understand, and be able to define the term cultural deprivation.

3 Today’s title: Cultural deprivation explained
Topic 1 Parents education and attitude Cultural deprivation Working class subculture Language There are 3 strands to cultural deprivation, our task today will be to ensure that we understand how each one can be seen to contribute to a child not achieving in school

4 You have 25 minutes for this task
Using pages (great criticisms of Bernstein!) and your hand out (Great for information on Douglas and criticisms of his ideas!) complete the focus on Five’s for Bernstein and Douglas. Parts of it have been filled in for you to model the style of writing you need to use in sociology. You must explain which social class is most likely to use each code and why this leads to their children having an advantage or disadvantage. You must explain what impact parental attitude, parenting style and their own experience of education have on working class and middle class children You have 25 minutes for this task

5 Over to you: Homework Your homework will be to complete the final focus on five for cultural deprivation focusing on the work of Sugarman (1970) and the concept of working class subculture now that you’ve done two of these you know how they’re done and so less information will be filled in for you. It is essential that you complete this task and bring it into class as you’ll need it to complete a practice exam question next lesson This will be due: Thursday 15th September

6 So what is being done to combat cultural deprivation?
Compensatory education: This is extra help for those students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them over come the inequalities they face in education and wider society

7 Link the images to the sociological concepts and scholars we have studied today

8 Objectives- Have you achieved them?
By the end of the lesson you should Explain the sociological support and criticisms for the concept of cultural deprivation Define and explain cultural deprivation using its 3 strands and relevant examples & sociologists Understand, and be able to define the term cultural deprivation.
