This can be achieved by blending quotes into your text!!
RL01 Apply thorough textual evidence to support a deep analysis of the text and complex inferences drawn from the text This can be achieved by blending quotes into your text!!
2
What are we blending?
3
What is the key to blending quotes?
Seamless integration—upon reading your response aloud, you shouldn’t be able to spot the location of your quotes ***Keep in mind that a quote doesn’t have to be a line of dialogue. Any text is fair game!
4
What is the 1st basic of blending quotes?
Never drop a quote! Don’t let a piece of textual evidence stand alone as its own sentence. INEFFECTIVE example—Jonas’ favorite memory is celebrating Christmas. “There were colored lights: red and green and yellow, twinkling from a tree which was, oddly, inside the room” (122).
5
What is the 2nd basic of blending quotes?
2. Use your own words to introduce a quotation. EFFECTIVE—Jonas’ favorite memory is that of the “colored lights…twinkling from the tree” (122).
6
What is the 3rd basic of blending quotes?
3. Your sentences needn’t contain every word of every quote that you use for support. Chop up these quotes into smaller fragments, and they will blend into your response more smoothly. Ex. Jonas thinks it is “an astonishing thing” that he has “the power to turn the speaker off” (79).
7
What is the 4th basic of blending quotes?
4. Watch out for tip off words like says, tells, or shows. These words indicate that a quote is coming and tip off the listener. However, if one uses the word that properly, this can be avoided. For example: Receiving a “bicycle at Nine” shows the children are “moving gradually out into the community” (41). Jonas telling Lily “there really [are] elephants” shows he wants to share what he is learning (41).
8
This works much better:
Ex. The Committee of Elders believes that receiving a bicycle at Nine encourages the children to gradually move “away from the protective family unit” (41).
9
What is the 5th basic of blending quotes?
5. Indicate changes you make in the body of your quote with brackets, ([ ]) and omissions with an ellipsis (…). Ellipses needn’t go at the beginning or the end of a quote. Don’t be afraid to make changes – they are necessary for blending effectively. Ex. When Asher is a Three, he stops “talking altogether” because he is frequently hit “with the discipline wand…that [stings] painfully “(55, 54).
10
How should I format citations?
1. end of sentence – quotation marks (if necessary) – page number in parentheses – punctuation mark Ex. …walking around in it” (30). Ex. … believed in his cause (30).
11
2. Cite your page numbers at the end of the blended sentence, not the end of the quote. For example, don’t write: When Asher is a Three, he stops “talking altogether” (55) because he is frequently hit “with the discipline wand” (54); he is often punished for mispronouncing words.
12
Instead, it should read:
When Asher is a Three, he stops “talking altogether” because he is frequently hit “with the discipline wand” ; he is often punished for mispronouncing words (55, 54)
13
3. If you cite two different pages in one sentence, simply place both page numbers, in the order in which they were used, at the sentence’s end. Ex. When Asher is a Three, he stops “talking altogether” because he is frequently hit “with the discipline wand…that [stings] painfully “(55, 54).
