Background A lot is going on, but the actions are not coordinated and their full potential is not achieved The national obesity programme challenges different stakeholders in society to collaborate, work towards the common goal, and share experiences Practical actions are presented to reduce the obesity on population level and to increase health of the population ”A practice of practices” developed by the stakeholders and coordinated by THL

Ultimate aim of the programme: Downturn in the obesity trend
Fewer children become obese adults Fewer adults gain weight during lifecourse Differences in obesity rates between population groups diminish Individuals in high risk of obesity related diseases lose weight / do not gain weight

Target populations Families of newborns (already during pregnancy)
0-12 –year old children 13–18 –year old youth Adult population (18–74 –years of age) High risk populations Individuals in high risk of developing obesity related diseases (e.g. type 2 diabetes) or having a chronic illness.

Evaluation THL will evaluate the results of the programme via national registers and surveys and municipal welfare reports The programme is ongoing, no results available yet, but the response from the field is promising: ”Ready-made tools and proven methods make health promotion activities substantially easier in municipalities. Of course, systematic work is needed to take the tools really into action. Strong local leadership and organization is essential, but national programme is valuable for support and justification.”
