1
Naming Chemical Compounds
Ionic Compounds & Molecular Compounds
2
Types of Ions Cations and Anions
Monatomic-meaning one element represented Ex. Cl-1 Na+1 Cations are named for the element Anions are named with an –ide ending Polyatomic- meaning more than one element represented Ex. OH-1 NH3 -1 Polyatomics are named for the ion
3
Ionic Compounds Monatomic cations Mono means 1
Cations are + metal ions Remember
4
Ionic Compounds Monatomic anions Mono means 1
Anions are – non-metal ions
5
Ionic Compounds Polyatomic ions Poly- means many or more than one
These are two or more atoms bonded together with an overall charge Most polyatomic ions are negative
6
Writing Binary Ionic Compound
Use the criss-cross method. Take the charge Number of the cation and make it the subscript on the anion and vice versa ALWAYS REDUCE Al O-2 Al2O3 Aluminum Ion + Oxide Ion Aluminum Oxide
7
Practice Potassium iodide KI Magnesium phosphate Mg3(PO4)2
Strontium sulfide SrS
