Instill pride about being a nurse and the opportunity to make a difference in the nursing profession since it is more than just a job Emphasize the value of nursing and the leadership role nurses have in the patient’s care Instill a solid foundation of knowledge that can be applied in different settings including how to anticipate patient needs Develop the leadership skills needed to facilitate team work in patient care Learn how to hold each other accountable and how to have a difficult conversation

Teach and practice the skills needed for a nurse to advocate for what a patient needs, using the chain of command Establish realistic expectations for a nurse’s first year of practice, such as becoming “a safe nurse” Reinforce the ability to know where to go and how to use the resources available Develop communication skills needed in building a relationship with the patient including the ability to set boundaries

Focus on the positive approach to engaging in change Develop job ready skills including how to show up for work and what that means Emphasize the development of soft skills Improve the communication with staff nurses who need to be more involved in the clinical training since they have the opportunity to positively impact the preparation of future nurses

What are your thoughts, ideas and suggestions in how we can work together to improve the nursing student experience, education and training? How can we make the transition from student to RN seamless and instill more confidence as they start their first job? How can we improve the relationship between the faculty and the staff who are precepting the students? What other thoughts do you have that you would like to share?
