3 Movement Along the Continuum
Your location on the health continuum is not constant throughout your life. Many of the choices you make on a daily bases affect your position on the health continuum.

4 Identifying Health Risks
What are some factors that could influence your health? Brainstorm with the person next to you.

5 Heredity To some extent, your level of health is already determined at the time you were born. Heredity – All the traits that are passed biologically from parent to child Traits that you inherit can affect your health.

6 Environment Physical environment – Both indoor and outdoor surroundings Being aware of potential risks in your physical environment can help protect your health. Social environment – Includes the people you spend time with Culture – beliefs and patterns of behavior that are shared by a group of people and passed from generation to generation Some aspects of culture can influence your health.

7 Media, Technology, Healthcare
Media can have a positive and negative impact on your health. Brainstorm with the person next to you one positive and negative. How does technology impact the health of people? Healthcare – Your health is impacted by the healthcare that is available to you and your family. This includes medical services provided by doctors, nurses, dentists, and therapists.

8 Behavior The decisions you make and the actions you take often have the greatest impact on your health. Habit – A behavior that is repeated so often that it becomes almost automatic Question: Why do you think teenagers tend to take more risks than any other age group?

9 Evaluating Health Risks
Risk factor – Any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other negative outcome There are three ways to evaluate a risk factor. Consider both short and long term consequences Decide whether you can control the risk factor Analyze the possible benefits and risks of the decision With the person next to you, list one current habit that could have negative long- term consequences.
