Epithets, Kennings, Imagery, and Alliteration
Epithets and Kennings are poetic devices whose foremost purpose is to maintain the rhythm and meter of the poem. Epithets and kennings also present key attributes of characters, important values of the time, and descriptions of people and places. Imagery – one or more sensory details used to develop descriptions of a person, place, or object Alliteration – the repetition of initial consonant sounds while I ponder weak and weary

Epithets: compound adjectives describing a person, place or event. “swift-footed Achilles” “sparkling-eyed Athena” Kennings: a metaphorical compound used to rename a person, place or event “the man of twists and turns…” “the father of men and gods” Imagery - words or phrases that create visuals through an appeal to the senses Imagery can reflect mood, characters, and theme Imagery is not always just to visualize a place or a person. Alliteration - a succession of similar consonant sounds
