1 Today is Wednesday, May 8th, 2013
Homework: RANDOM HOMEWORK LOG CHECK TODAY Homework Packet Due this Friday Finish Reading Ch. 14 by Friday Ch Combined Test on Monday, May 13th Warm Up: Describe different colors of light you’ve seen and the conditions under which you saw them? (Examples: pink and orange sunset, red moon, Northern Lights – although they can’t be seen from Shanghai)

2 Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of radiant energy and electromagnetic waves by identifying the seven different forms and brainstorming examples of each.

3 Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

4 Radiant energy – energy given off by electrons; it’s a form of electromagnetic radiation, which is a combination of electrical and magnetic energy. Travels as an electromagnetic wave This is a TRANSVERSE WAVE

5 Remember….. A transverse wave looks like:

6 Travels at the speed of light!!!!!!!!!
Speed that light travels is different in different materials Speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 m/s (approx. 300,000,000 m/s) Which is………. 134 ms (milliseconds) to travel around the Earth at the Equator one time 8.3 min (minutes) to travel from the surface of the Sun to Earth (approx. 150,000,000 km) 4.2 years to nearest star (Proxima Centauri – part of the Alpha Centauri triple star system)

7 Depending on the wavelength, light has different energy
Like sound, it can be absorbed or reflected or it can pass through certain materials However, not through vibration of particles, so it can travel through space Depending on the wavelength, light has different energy 7 types – radiowave, microwave, infrared, visible (ROYGBIV), UV, X-ray, gamma
