1 Sample PBIS Problem Identification and Solution Finding
Adapted from TIPS

2 VTPBiS Problem Solving Process:
Question: Fill in the information below: Do we have a problem? (identify – ODRs and OSS Data overtime) What is the precise nature of our problem? (SWIS: ODRs big 7 and custom graphs)  Why does the problem exist, & what can we do about it? What are the actual elements of our plan? (Action Plan) Is our plan being implemented, & is it working? (how will you evaluate & revise plan)

3 Solution Development problem statement & hypothesis:
Prevention Teaching Reward Extinction Corrective Consequence Safety Have participants come up with ideas This table is a prompt for getting the discussion going. teams do not need to identify a solution for each category above, but the categories provide prompts for the team: What can we do to prevent the problem? What can we do to teach the students to do what we expect? What can we do to reinforce appropriate student behavior? What can we do to minimize reinforcement for the problem behavior? What can we do to correct inappropriate behavior? What data will we collect to measure effectiveness of solutions? Choose a solution or a package of solutions to implement. Do not default to doing everything listed. Always choose the least amount of tasks/actions that you think will produce the biggest effect. Newton, J. S., Todd, A. W., Algozzine, K., Horner, R. 4 Implementation and Evaluation
Precise Problem Statement, based on review of data (What, When, Where, Who, Why) Solution Actions (e.g., Prevent, Teach, Prompt, Reward, Correction, Extinction, Safety) Who? By When? Goal with Timeline, Fidelity & Outcome Measures, & Updates Newton, J. S., Todd, A. W., Algozzine, K., Horner, R. H., & Algozzine, B. (2009). The Team Initiated Problem Solving (TIPS) Training Manual.
