The Small Steps 4 Life Program is a program made to get young people and their families to take on Olympic Values, Eat Well, Get Active and most importantly Feel Good! Its also to support long-term behaviour and attitude change among young people across the UK. The Olympic/Paralympic values involves principles that can be applied to education and to society. One of these values is excellence which means giving the best in everything. It is not only about winning, but also about participating, making a commitment to progress against personal goals, striving to be and to do our best in our daily lives. The Small Steps 4 Life Program promotes for this by putting the Olympic value excellence into the challenges they offer and help people to remember that games are not only about winning and it’s the taking part that should be treasured. Eating well is very important so that our body is receiving nutrients in order to perform its daily functions. The Small Steps 4 Life program encourages young people to Eat Well in order to ensure that they are living a healthy lifestyle. It can help us relate better with others and gives us a chance to talk to each other about what’s going on in our lives. There are many challenges that the program provides in order to help us eat well with our family and friends and enjoy our food. Some challenges they provide include: try new things, eat more fruit and eat breakfast etc. Here are some top tips from the Small Steps 4 Life Program: eat breakfast, drink more water and snack on fruit. Research shows that a lot of young people tend to eat unhealthy foods more than healthy foods and do not eat in sensible portions. This is an issue as eating problems could lead to severe illnesses such as anorexia and bulimia. It is important to have a balanced diet and get your protein and vitamins. The Small Steps 4 Life Program helps people to understand that exercise and getting active doesn’t have to be strenuous workouts or long jogs but things like walking to school with friends, playing a sport that you enjoy or making up a dance routine etc. Its important to Get Active to keep our bodies fit and looking good. There are many challenges you can get involved with to get active like joining a sports club or dance club. The Small Steps 4 Life Program provide: fast fun run, pace yourself, outside gym, and get dancing etc. Here are some reasons of why getting active is great: Having fun, having more energy, being able to sleep better, keeping flexible, feeling more relaxed and happier, having a healthy heart, having stronger muscles and bones and maintaining a healthy weight. Feeling Good is about how good we feel and how confident we are dealing with situations is usually and known as 'emotional health'. There will be times when we feel stressed, depressed, angry or sad but it is important to try and overcome these and learn to deal with those situations in order to return to feeling good again. Here are some tips from the Small Steps 4 Life Program: Get rest, stay upbeat, have fun, enjoy the moment, talk to a friend, stay cool, don’t worry too much and stay in control. Some challenges they provide include: Doodle Diary, have some ‘me’ time and help someone else. Research shows that the majority of people feel that getting active improves your well-being the most.
