IRU: Launch of Report on
Commercial Vehicle of the Future Brussels 14 February 2017 ACEA comments Manfred Schuckert
2
General comments An integrated approach is key to reduce CO2 from road freight transport. A regulatory framework allowing for innovation in road freight transport is necessary Sound statistics and data are crucial for deciding future policy actions – transport growth, CO2, safety The cost-effectiveness of measures must be considered Technology neutrality must prevail
3
Propulsion systems and energy carriers
The room and benefits of electricity are over emphasised Fuel cells with hydrogen have not been properly addressed in the report Conventional fuels should be improved within their specifications by blending with renewable components
4
Vehicle design Aerodynamics is an issue of complete vehicle combinations – not only front of truck Importance of active safety systems should be more emphasised Improved safety does not necessarily go through longer cabs
5
logistics Longer and heavier vehicles (LHV): these also have potential for regional delivery LHV do not lead to reverse modal shift – as shown during trials Cost of fuels differs throughout Europe – increase of fuel tank capacity and increase of service weight of vehicle with negative effect on fuel consumption
