SERVICE LEARNING BY: Kourtnee Williams

Service Learning Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility http://www2.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fgdefinition.htm
3
Service Learning Benefits Student learning is enhanced by joining theory with experience, and thought with action. Community needs are met through direct service that is meaningful and relevant. Students help others, give of themselves and enter into caring relationships. Students see the relevance of their academic studies to the real world. The civic and citizenship skills of the students are enhanced. Students are better prepared for their careers and continued education. http://www2.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fgdefinition.htm

The South GA Classic Experience

South GA Classic Golf Tournament Before this tournament I had never known golf to be such an interesting and hardworking sport. Walking 18 holes carrying the scoreboard in 95 degree heat was hard work. Very proud to say that I was one of the many volunteers that represented VSU at this prestigious event with some of the best golfers around. I even got a few mementos from some very talented pro golfers

What I Learned Service learning/community service has opened my eyes to a whole new world. It taught me that giving back to those who look at you as if you are a superstar is the best thing in this world that I can do. Volunteering your time to others goes a long way, it not only makes you a better person, but it also brings the community together. I learned that being active in the community can bring prosperity and I can make a difference with one little act.
