Data MEDPAR inpatient hospital discharge data Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries age 65 or over discharged during fiscal year 2005 with DRG code 88 (COPD N=355,178). Managed care patients are not included since their encounter data are not available.

Comorbidities The following comorbid conditions were identified for this analysis. Asthma (ICD-9-CM codes ), Diabetes (ICD-9-CM codes ), Depression (ICD-9-CM codes 296.2, , 311), Hypertension (ICD-9-CM codes ), Malignant neoplasms (ICD-9-CM codes ), Atherosclerosis (ICD-9-CM codes ), Ischemic heart disease (ICD-9-CM codes ), Heart failure (ICD-9-CM codes ), Peripheral vascular disease (ICD-9-CM codes ), Gastrointestinal hemorrhage (ICD-9-CM codes ), Renal failure (ICD-9-CM codes ), Stroke (ICD-9-CM codes ).
