Explanatory Note Critical Commentary What is the title? Who is the author/painter/artist? When was it produced? What do you observe? What is going on in the image? What information does this give your about the early 1900s and the Harlem Renaissance? What information does this give about the African American experience? ***The term “Negro” was not considered derogatory or offensive at this time. The term dates to the turn of the twentieth century and represented a moving forward from past stereotypical forms of representation.
