1 1 Introduction to Algebra: Integers

2 R.1 Fractions 1.4 Subtracting Integers Objectives Find the opposite of an integer. Subtract integers. Combine adding and subtracting of integers.

3 Find the opposite of an integer.
Opposite integers are the same distance from 0 on the number line but are on opposite sides of 0. When you add opposites, the sum is always 0. The opposites are also called additive inverses.

4 Find the opposite of an integer.
Example Find the opposite of each number and show that the sum of the numbers is 0. 6 –8 The opposite of 6 is 6 and 6 + (6) = 0 The opposite of 8 is 8 and 8 + 8 = 0 The opposite of 0 is 0 and = 0

5 Subtract integers.

6 Subtract integers. Subtract the integers. 4 – 10 Example

7 Subtract integers. Subtract the integers. –9 – (–6) –9 – (–6) = –9 + (+6) = –3 Example

8 Combine adding and subtracting of integers.
Example Simplify by completing all the calculations. Change all subtractions to adding the opposite. Change 10 to –10. Change 12 to –12. Add from left to right. First add –5 + (–10) . Then add –15 + (–12) . Add –
