What is fusion and how is it a factor for the life on earth?
Open up your laptops, go to MrHyatt.rocks, and do today’s bell work Questions of the week: What is the sun responsible for in our solar system? What is fusion and how is it a factor for the life on earth? Scale Scale Description 4 Through independent work beyond what was taught in class, I can (examples include, but are not limited to): research current and past earth and sun conditions. investigate causes and possible solutions for global climate change. compare and contrast the patterns in the organization and distribution of matter in the sun, earth, moon system. compare and contrast different solar events and their impact on earth. 3 I can: identify patterns in the organization and distribution of matter in the universe and the forces that determine them. explain the physical properties of the Sun and its dynamic nature and connect them to conditions and events on Earth. identify, analyze, and relate the internal (Earth system) and external (astronomical) conditions that contribute to global climate change. describe heat as the energy transferred by convection, conduction, and radiation, and explain the connection of heat to change in temperature or states of matter. 2 determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other astronomy specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific technical context relevant to grades 9-12 texts and topics identify from a list the patterns of distribution of matter in the sun, earth, moon system. list the physical properties of the sun describe the key parts of the structure of earth and earth’s atmosphere. explain ways in which to measure temperature. 1 show the patterns of distribution of matter in the sun, earth, moon system. select from a list the physical properties of the sun, earth and moon. list the key parts of the structure of earth, sun and moon. I’m coming around to grade these
1. What does your graph tell you about the sun? 2. What do your calculations tell you about the sun? 3. Make maximum/minimum predictions for the years 2018, & 2030 4. How many sunspots were there during the year you were born? 5. Predict whether it will be closer to a maximum or a minimum when you graduate college and when you turn 30 years old

The Sunspot Cycle: a review
The number of sunspots reaches a maximum (or minimum) about every 11 years. successive maximums have spots with reversed magnetic polarity, so the polarity and maximum solar cycle is 22 years long. 22 years video

A solar cycle: a montage of ten years' worth of images, demonstrating the variation in solar activity during a sunspot cycle, from after August 30, 1991, to September 6, 2001.

Movement of the Sun The rotation rate of the sun was determined by sunspot movement. The average rate of rotation of the Sun is 25 days near the equator, and up to 36 days at the poles. The average revolution (around the milky way) of the Sun is about 200 million years. *sun is approximately 30,000 light years from the center of the Milky Way and orbits around that center with about with an average speed of 230 km/s or 800,000 km/h. The Sun has completed about 23 of those orbits so far. video
12
Magnetism The Sun has a very large and very complex magnetic field.
The magnetic field at an average place on the Sun is twice as strong as the magnetic field of Earth. Since the Sun's surface is more than 12,000 times larger than Earth's, the overall influence of the Sun's magnetic field extends out past Pluto. It is partly responsible for carrying the particles out to the planets which cause auroras.

Answer the question from Last Week
What information about the sun can we gather from sunspots?
