4 The real story… Many of the statistics about to be shown are found after a nine year study on the effects of drug use among athletes. A nine year study of the effects of drugs on high level athletic performance

5 AMERICAN ATHLETIC INSTITUTE
The American Athletic Institute was established to take an active and visible role in the holistic education of American athletes and to establish a reputation of activism in the areas of both performance enhancing and performance debilitating drug use by athletes at all levels… DRUGS PORT The studies were conducted through the American Athletics Institute and presented all over the United States and through various venues by John Underwood. AMERICAN ATHLETIC INSTITUTE

6 14,000 TESTS 20 YEARS John Underwood has conducted nearly 14,000 physiological tests over the past 20 years on elite athletes. The following slides reflect his efforts to deter drug use by athletes. John Underwood of the AAI has conducted physiological tests for the past twenty years and by first studying what makes optimal performance possible, he has a perspective for what ruins it. It is from this vantage point that these slides were made.

7 Teens are starting risky behaviors even younger than before.

11 So take for instance let’s look at the brain
So take for instance let’s look at the brain. When you are first learning a behavior such as throwing a ball, it takes your frontal and cerebellum to learn the activity. Once it is learned it remain

12 IF THE BRAIN DOESN'T WORK THE BODY DOESN'T WORK
Rested Tired Blood flow in brain 8 hours sleep Your brain needs to be rested and ready in order to perform any task. This is blood flow to the brain. In the 8 hours of sleep side, the blood flow is enormous especially to the frontal lobe and sides which is where practiced skills are stored and upper level cognitive function happens. On the right this brain got less than the 8 hours and the blood flow is dramatically decreased, especially to the frontal lobe. This means that the un-rested brain is really being set up to fail. No sleep WORKS FAILS IF THE BRAIN DOESN'T WORK THE BODY DOESN'T WORK

17 NICOTINE In low concentrations (an average cigarette yields only about 1 mg of absorbed nicotine), the substance acts as an incredibly strong stimulant and is one of the main factors responsible for the dependence-forming properties of tobacco smoking. It is clearly one of the most addictive substances you could take into your body. "Nicotine addiction has historically been one of the hardest addictions to break." The pharmacological and behavioral characteristics that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Very easy to get hooked very hard to stop… Nicotine is the most addictive substance you can take into the human body. It is more addictive than heroin or cocaine or meth. 17

MARIJUANA SKILL IMPAIRMENT Simple hand skill test on the left of a non user and on the right of a habitual user. 5 other parts of the brain have to re-route the signal in order to make this happen and this is residual damage the person doesn’t even have to be stoned this is still what it looks like. That is not optimal. NON USER SIMPLE HAND SKILL MARIJUANA USER SIMPLE HAND SKILL Note: Subject not under influence during scan. POT OR NOT? YOUR CHOICE YOUR GAME
