THE LAW & THE PROPHETS (MATT. 5:17-20) INTRO: SOME THOUGHT JESUS WAS AGAINST THE LAW. 1. Because He condemned the traditions of men who CLAIMED to uphold the Law (Mt. 15:2; Acts 6:14). 2. Denominations today think we are against faith & grace because we oppose MAN’S traditions & definitions. 3. Jesus answers His critics…

THE LAW & THE PROPHETS (MATT. 5:17-20) I. “NOT TO DESTROY THE LAW OR PROPHETS” (5:17). A. Adventists: “The Law is still in effect.” B. CONTEXT: 1. Contrast between “Destroy” & “Fulfill”. a. Destroy – dissolve, overthrow. b. Fulfill – satisfy, finish, accomplish. 2. Jesus did not come to cast it down, but to bring it to it’s proper fulfillment (Rom. 3:19-21; Gal. 3:24-25). 3. “It is finished” (Lk. 4:21; Jn 19:28-30).

THE LAW & THE PROPHETS (MATT. 5:17-20) II. STABILITY OF GOD’S LAW & PURPOSE (5:18). A. MEN: Modify God’s Law. B. GOD LAW: 1. Compared to heaven & earth. 2. Not pass “till all things be accomplished”. (Cf Mt. 1:25) 3. “It is finished” (Jn 19:30; Lk. 24:44). 4. Preaching of “the gospel” (Lk. 16:16).

THE LAW & THE PROPHETS (MATT. 5:17-20) III. MEN DISREGARD GOD’S LAW (5:19-20). A. Bahai Faith: “Jesus broke the Sabbath.” Adventists: Pick & choose which “sabbath laws” to obey. B. JESUS: 1. “Least” = breaks & encourages breaking the law (5:19). 2. “Great” = do & teach! 3. “For” like Pharisees “no wise enter” (5:20; Rom. 10:1-4). 4. Disobedient rejected (Lk. 19:15-24).

THE LAW & THE PROPHETS (MATT. 5:17-20) CONCLUSION: A. The Law & Prophets pointed to Christ. B. Jesus upheld them faithfully until He fulfilled them. C. Jesus NEVER encouraged disobedience to God’s will! If you wish to be IN HIS KINGDOM, you MUST BE OBEDIENT!
