Honors Wrinkle Builder 8/26/13
You must label each of the following as either an observation or a hypothesis: Hedgehogs sleep during the day. If hedgehogs sleep during the day then hedgehogs must be awake during the night.
2
General Wrinkle Builder 8/26/13
Hedgehogs sleep during the day. Is this an example of a hypothesis or an observation?
3
THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD Make an observation. Form a hypothesis.
Make a prediction. Experiment. Collect and analyze data. Draw conclusions.
4
OBSERVATION The act of perceiving a natural occurrence.
Ex. Hedgehogs sleep during the day.
5
HYPOTHESIS A proposed explanation for the way a particular aspect of the natural world functions (an educated guess). Ex. If hedgehogs sleep during the day then hedgehogs must be awake during the night. IF & THEN STATEMENT
6
PREDICTION A statement that forecasts what would happen in a test situation if the hypothesis were true. WHAT WOULD THE PREDICTION BE???
7
EXPERIMENT Used to test a hypothesis and the prediction.
HOW WOULD YOU CONDUCT THE EXPERIMENT??? Control? Experimental? Independent variable? Dependent variable?
8
CONTROL V. EXPERIMENTAL
Control group- is the standard for comparison. (does not receive the independent variable. Experimental group- receives the independent variable.
9
INDEPENDENT V. DEPENDENT
Independent variable- is the variable that is changed or manipulated. Dependent variable- the variable that is observed or measured. (also called responding)
10
COLLECT & ANALYZE Collect information taken from the experiment and organize it. HOW CAN WE ORGANIZE OUR DATA?
11
CONCLUSION The hypothesis is either accepted or rejected. Construct a theory! A THEORY IS HIGHLY TESTED!!!
12
MAKING AN INFERENCE A conclusion made on the basis of facts and previous knowledge rather than on direct observations. So what is the difference between an inference and an observation?
13
3-2-1 Chart List 3 things you found out. 2 interesting facts.
1 question you still have.
14
HONORS: Can you write a procedure that can be repeated by your classmates???
