PILGRIMS AND PURITANS
2
Who is a pilgrim? A pilgrim is someone who takes a trip for religious purposes.
3
The Backstory…. England was a Roman Catholic nation until 1534 when King Henry VIII declared himself as head of a new church. The church was named CHURCH OF ENGLAND. King Henry VIII and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, changed aspects of the church that made it different than the Roman Catholic Church, but many people felt that the new church still held the same Roman church practices.
4
The Backstory… These people wanted a simpler faith and for the church to return to worshipping like earlier Christians had. These people were called Puritans because they wanted to purify the church.

Separating from the Church
There was another group of people who felt that the Church of England was beyond reform. These people were called Separatists. The Separatists wanted a completely new, separate church. This was a dangerous idea because it was illegal to be a part of any church other than the Church of England.
6
King James Anyone who did not follow the Church of England would be punished (heavy fines and imprisonment). When Queen Elizabeth died, King James took over. King James persecuted those who did not follow the Church. King James was determined to make everyone conform to follow the Church and there would be consequences for those who did not.
7
The Separatists By the early 1600s, the Separatists asked permission to start their own church. King James would not allow it. The Separatists decided that their next option would be to flee to Holland. From , life in Holland was not easy for the Separatists – now known as Pilgrims. Their next plan was to travel to America.

Speedwell and Mayflower
In August 1620, the Pilgrims set out for America. There were two ships – the Speedwell and the Mayflower. The Speedwell kept leaking and the ships turned back for repair. The Speedwell was not able to be repaired.
9
The Mayflower On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower set sail for Virginia with all of the passengers and crew. Each person had only 7 feet x 2.5 feet of space. The journey took 66 days – they arrived in America on November 11, 1620.
10
The New World The Pilgrims were wanting to go to Jamestown, however they landed in Cape Cod instead because of the weather. From Cape Cod, they traveled to Plymouth.
11
The Mayflower Compact The Pilgrims knew that rules needed to be established and everyone needed to agree to follow the rules, otherwise there would be chaos. A document (later called the Mayflower Compact) was created that outlined the laws that they would follow. The Mayflower Compact stated that: the colonists would remain loyal subjects to King James the colonists would live according to the Christian faith the colonists would create one society and work together the colonists would create and enact “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices…” for the good of the colony, and would follow everything that was established
12
The Puritans In 1630, the Puritans who were in England traveled to America. The Puritans were a group of people who grew discontent in the Church of England and wanted reforms. The King punished those who did not follow the Church, and so the Puritans set out for religious reform in America. They traveled on the Arbella and landed in New England. The Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in a town that they named Boston.
13
The Impact The places that the Pilgrims and Puritans landed in were the early English settlements. The Pilgrims and Puritans paved the way for future colonies to develop.
