EMOTIVE HEADLINE: grab reader’s attention! STRAP-LINE: additional information to the headline STAND-FIRST: Summarises the key events of story – either para or bulletpoints Read through the excerpt of Enfield’s story about the girl, the collision, and the cheque. Create a splash front page for a tabloid newspaper (tone?) including an emotive headline, a strap-line (or two) and a stand-first.

The Authorial Intention in the story of the collision is to emphasise the horror and violence that Hyde inspires. Why don’t we have his name until the end (“It was a man by the name of Hyde”, p10)? How does Stevenson create a sense of horror in the collision between the girl and the man? How does the description of the man, and the impact he has on others, intensify this horror? How does the final squabbling about the cheque develop a sense of mystery and horror?

How does the description of the man, and the impact he has on others, intensify this horror? “There is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something down-right detestable. I never saw a man I so disliked, and yet I scarce know why. He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn’t specify the point. He’s an extraordinary looking man, and yet I really can name nothing out of the way. No, sir; I can make no hand of it; I can’t describe him. And it’s not want of memory; for I declare I can see him this moment.” (10)

“Killing him being out of the question, we did the next best. We told the man we could and would make such a scandal out of this, as should make his name stink” (8) “no gentleman but wishes to avoid a scene” (8) How does the final squabbling about the cheque develop a sense of mystery and horror? “Set your mind at rest... I will stay with you till the banks open and cash the cheque myself.” (8) “Ten pounds in gold and a cheque for the balance on Coutts” (8)
