Properties of Water (page 23)
Supplies needed per group: cup of water, cup of oil, 2 strips of paper towel, wax paper, timer, metric ruler, ***pipette*** Notice that you are measuring in millimeters (mm) for # 3. For #6… looking at the SIDE of the drop. Please place supplies back on the counter when you are done. Send a rep up with your oil and water numbers (mm).

Oil vs. Water (in mm) Oil Water

The Structure of Water All matter is made up of atoms.
An element is a substance made up of only one kind of atom. Examples: Au – Gold Cu – Copper C - Carbon
5
Atoms attach together (or bond) to form molecules.
Two hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom form a water molecule. Chemical formula (or shortened way to write it) for water is H2O.
6
Polar Molecule A molecule that has electrically charged areas is a polar molecule. Water is a polar substance. Oxygen end has a slight negative charge while the hydrogen ends have a slight positive charge.
7
Water’s unique properties…
The positive hydrogen ends of one water molecule attract the negative oxygen ends of nearby water molecules. As a result, the water molecules tend to stick together.
8
Water Molecule Model Create your own water molecule using the toothpicks and marshmallows. Draw, color, AND label your water molecule.
