1
Tides and Eclipses I can describe the pattern of the tides.
I can explain how the position of the sun, moon, and Earth affect the tides. I can describe a solar eclipse. I can describe a lunar eclipse. I can explain how the position of the sun, moon, and Earth produce eclipses.
2
TIDES Tides occur because of the pull of gravity of the moon and the sun on the Earth's oceans.
3
TIDES BECAUSE THE MOON IS CLOSER THAN THE SUN, IT HAS THE GREATEST EFFECT ON OUR TIDES. THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 2 HIGH TIDES AND 2 LOW TIDES EVERY 24 HOURS.
4
TIDES SPRING TIDES AND NEAP TIDES ARE THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF TIDES CAUSED BY THE MOON.
5
SPRING TIDES OCCUR AT THE NEW MOON AND FULL MOON
SUN, MOON, AND EARTH ARE LINED UP VERY HIGH HIGH TIDES VERY LOW LOW TIDES
6
NEAP TIDES OCCUR AT FIRST QUARTER AND THIRD QUARTER
SUN, MOON, AND EARTH ARE AT RIGHT ANGLES VERY LOW HIGH TIDES VERY HIGH LOW TIDES
7
ECLIPSES OCCURS WHEN A LARGE SHADOW TRAVELS ACROSS THE SURFACE OF AN OBJECT
8
SOLAR ECLIPSE OCCURS WHEN THE MOON PASSES BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE EARTH AT THE NEW MOON. THE SHADOW OF THE MOON FALLS ON THE EARTH APPEARING TO BLOCK OUT THE SUN
9
SOLAR ECLIPSE UMBRA: DARKER PART OF THE SHADOW
TOTAL ECLIPSE IN THE UMBRA PENUMBRA: LIGHTER PART OF THE SHADOW PARTIAL ECLIPSE IN THE PENUMBRA

SOLAR ECLIPSE
11
LUNAR ECLIPSE OCCURS WHEN THE EARTH IS BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE MOON
THE SHADOW OF THE EARTH FALLS ON THE MOON APPEARING TO BLOCK OUT THE MOON
12
LUNAR ECLIPSE OCCUR SOMETIMES DURING THE FULL MOON PHASE
TOTAL ECLIPSE IN THE UMBRA PARTIAL ECLIPSE IN THE PENUMBRA
