5 The Geographic Grid A meridian is an arc drawn between the North and South poles. Their location of each can be found using a system of numbering called longitude. A parallel is a circle drawn around the globe parallel to the equator and at right angles to meridians. Their location can be found using a system of numbering called latitude Together these make up the Geographic Grid that allows us to precisely describe the location of any place on Earth’s surface.

6 Longitude values range from 0º (prime meridian) to 180º East or West.
Latitude is measured from 0º (equator) to 90º North or South Video Link

7 Coordinates: General to Specific
General Location (Glendale, California): 34ºN and 118ºW in degrees (⁰) Mathematical Location (Glendale, California): Each degree can be divided into minutes (‘) 34º08’N and 118º15’W Precise Location (Glendale HS): Minutes can be divided into seconds (“) 34º08’45”N and 118º13’58”W (Video Link)
