1 How to Write an Introductory Paragraph

2 What is an introductory paragraph?
An intro paragraph should be short and to the point Gives your audience a concise idea of what they will learn You do not get to the “meat” of the essay

3 Introductory paragraphs should do three things:
Briefly introduce the topic (Attention Getter) Make some basic statement about your general topic (think big idea) Provide background information Introduce main character(s), title, and author Connect the play and the characters to your big idea using similar word choice and/or transitions Clearly state your limitation, stance, and direction (thesis)

Almost every time one turns on a television, a number of shows are extremely violent. Many public schools require students to wear school uniforms.

5 Example Introduction Smoking is an issue that is currently under a lot of recent controversy. People who smoke believe they know all about the damage they are inflicting upon themselves. However, the controversy stems from secondhand smoke. Each day, thousands the risks associated with of unsuspecting people are exposed to this dangerous toxin. Furthermore, many of these individuals are unaware of the negative effects of secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke can cause a wide range of cancers, various diseases in small children, and can also cause heart disease in otherwise healthy adults.
