Topic 2b – The City Objective:
Describe, in detail, the standard of living, for people in American cities during the 1800s. Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources Relevance: Progress and industry develops at a price, change always comes at a price Use evidence to strengthen your description of events
2
Life in the city Low Standard of Living Tenements: Low Wages:
small, often dirty, structurally unsafe, crowded apartments Low Wages: factory work brings low wages (15 cents an hour for an unskilled worker on average) Poor Health: Trash thrown out onto the street and no one picks it up Rats and vermin plague tenements and streets Creation of food and drugs are not monitored allowing for health hazardous practices Explain some of the major issues around the big cities of the United States during industrialization. Thinking about today, what are some reasons why we do not have these same problems/issues? (be specific)
3
Life in the city Poor Education: High levels of immigration:
Children had to work which meant no time for school Lack of education meant lack of opportunity to succeed or gain skills High levels of immigration: Non-English speaking immigrants made all of these conditions easier to exploit Caused racial tension between ethnic groups Caused racial tension between ethnicities based on how “American” they were (who was here longer) What are some reasons why low levels of education inhibit people’s ability to excel in society? What are issues (even today) that embody some of the problems with high levels of immigration?

Since your notes are not in color, answer the two questions on the map below. Which states had the highest percentage of immigrants in 1860? Compare the settlement of immigrants in the North and the South. What do you know about the South that might account for this difference? What about immigrants in general?
