small, often dirty, structurally unsafe, crowded apartments
Low Wages:
factory work brings low wages (15 cents an hour for an unskilled worker on average)
Poor Health:
Trash thrown out onto the street and no one picks it up
Rats and vermin plague tenements and streets
Creation of food and drugs are not monitored allowing for health hazardous practices
Explain some of the major issues around the big cities of the United States during industrialization.
Thinking about today, what are some reasons why we do not have these same problems/issues? (be specific)

Children had to work which meant no time for school
Lack of education meant lack of opportunity to succeed or gain skills
High levels of immigration:
Non-English speaking immigrants made all of these conditions easier to exploit
Caused racial tension between ethnic groups
Caused racial tension between ethnicities based on how “American” they were (who was here longer)
