Levels of Prejudice 1. Prejudiced attitudes- accepting stereotypes, scapegoating 2. Acts of Prejudice – name calling, ridicule, jokes, social exclusion 3. Discrimination – not letting someone do something because of their race, gender, etc… employment, educational, harassment (hostile acts) 4. Violence – threats, assault, murder, arson, desecration because of race, gender, ethnicity, etc… 5. Genocide – the deliberate extermination (killing) of an entire people Each level, unchecked, leads to the next. Where do you draw the line?

The Holocaust The systematic slaughter (killing) of 6 million Jews, (two-thirds of the total European Jewish population) and 5 million others between 1933 and 1945 by the Nazis. Victims included gypsies, disabled, Poles, Russians, religious/political reasons

Family is Jewish and German 13 years old when she went into hiding Never lived to see the age of 16 Became the name and face of the Holocaust

Move to Amsterdam 1933 – Family moved to Amsterdam to escape Nazi hatred Amsterdam had not been taken over yet Mr. Frank re-established his business Germany in yellow. Netherlands (capital – Amsterdam) in green.

Mr. Frank passed business to non-Jewish friends Many new laws and restrictions Jews may not own their own businesses, Jewish children have to go to Jewish schools, all Jews have to wear a yellow Star of David, and countless other restrictions.

Going Into Hiding July 1942 – Margot got called up to be taken away to a “work camp” The entire family would be arrested if Margot does not go Mr. Frank has been expecting this- has arranged a hiding place Moved into hiding in a suite of rooms above Mr. Frank’s business

The “Secret Annex” The “Secret Annex” – 263 Prinsengracht, a small apartment located in an empty section of the building owned by Otto Frank's company. Business continued, as usual, in the front part of the building The entrance to the Secret Annex is concealed behind a movable bookcase.

The Protectors 4 people – all Dutch
Hid the families and brought them supplies and news from the outside The people in hiding are helped by Otto Frank’s four employees Miep Gies, Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler and Bep Voskuijl Put themselves at great risk – could have been arrested, deported, shot, etc…

The Arrest August 4, 1944 – 10/10:30 a.m.
German car pulled up and they entered the building Began search that eventually led to the bookcase hiding the entrance The people in hiding and the two male helpers are arrested Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl are left behind Were hiding for over 2 years Thought to be betrayed by someone working the warehouse

Aftermath All members sent to camp in Holland
Sept – taken east to Auschwitz death camp Men/Women separated Oct – Margot/Anne separated from Mother Sent to Bergen-Belsen camp All except Mr. Frank died in the camps Mr. Frank was the only survivor – Germans left the camp and he was left behind.

The Diary Anne’s 13th birthday - she receives a diary as a present.
She begins writing in it immediately (before going into hiding) Diary becomes her friend and her confidante

Saving of the Diary Mr. Frank returned to the annex in 1945 after he was liberated Miep had found and saved the diary knowing that it was important to Anne. Anne had always wanted her diary published Mr. Frank fulfills her wish and diary is published June 25, 1947
