1. Molecules – Made up of atoms Found inside of cells, smaller than a cell Thousands of different types living inside one cell Four basic categories of molecules: Carbohydrates Proteins Nucleic acids Lipids (fats)

2. Carbohydrates – Made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen Examples include sugar (glucose) and starch Carbohydrates are found in plants (cellulose) and even in your textbook

3. Proteins – Made up of amino acids Amino acids link together to form protein chains. The order of amino acids is important as is which amino acids are included. Example: enzymes (catalysts – change)

4. Nucleic Acids – Made up of groups of nucleotides Two types of nucleic acids: DNA and RNA The arrangement of nucleotides in DNA is a code. The DNA code determines which amino acids will be in a protein. RNA helps in protein synthesis by using the coded instructions in DNA.

5. Lipids (Fats)- Used for energy storage Many parts of a cell are made of lipids/fats
