Review: Earthquakes Topics: Earth’s Layers Earthquakes
Locating Epicenter Plate Tectonics Continental Drift Sea Floor Spreading
2
What are the Earth’s Layers?
Crust: Thin Layer Surface Mantle: Thick Part Asthenosphere Outer Core: Liquid Inner Core: Solid Nickel & Iron Deeper you go Temp, Pressure & Density Increases
3
What are the components of an Earthquake?
Focus: point in the earth’s crust where the rocks break Epicenter: place on the surface directly above the focus
4
Which areas of the world have the most seismic activity?
The edge of the Pacific Ocean is known as the “Ring of Fire” because of its seismic activity. Mountains, volcanoes, and Earthquakes are associated with this part of the world.
5
We locate the Earthquake by Determining three Epicenter distances. EQ
6
Determining Epicenter Distances
7
7) How do we find the epicenter distance if given the difference in arrival times of two waves? Draw two dots on a paper the number of minutes apart. Slide the paper until the dots match the curves. Look down to see the distance.
8
The super continent. Alfred Wegner’s theory of Continental Drift.
What is Pangaea? The super continent. Alfred Wegner’s theory of Continental Drift.
9
What evidence did he have for his theory?
N. and S. America fit together with Africa and Europe The structure of the rocks matched perfectly with the coast of Africa and Europe Tropical fossils were found in cold climates along the coast
10
) What are divergent boundaries?
This is where oceanic plates move apart; mid-ocean ridges are created (divergent part is the rift valley).
11
3) What are convergent zones?
Plates come together Continent-Continent= Mountains form (Himalayas) Continent-Oceanic= Oceanic crusts sinks into the mantle and melts (subduction); trenches and volcanic mountains form (Andes Mts)
12
What are transform plate boundaries?
In transform fault boundaries, plates slide past each other. (ex. San Andreas fault)
