1 Jared Conway’s science fair project.
Mr.Gorden, 5th period

2 Scientific Question: What minerals will react best with vinegar?

3 Background. For this subject, I chose the rocks and minerals acid test because my mom studied geology and had all the necessary equipment and tools. I also like to collect rocks and minerals and I thought it would be cool to do an acidic test for some of them. Therefore, I decided to ask; what mineral has the best reaction with vinegar? My dad also studied a little geology in high school. That also drove me to do this experiment.

4 Hypothesis. Hypothesis: “If limestone comes into contact with vinegar, then it will start to bubble”.

5 Variables Independent Variable : 1 (9ml)drop Of vinegar
Dependent Variable : Measured Reaction with Vinegar+Minerals/rocks. Controls : 1. Room temperature , 2.Amount of Vinegar used(9ml) 3. Time Elapsed with mineral with Vinegar.

6 Procedure For experiment.
Have 1 cup of Pure Vinegar. Fill one eye dropper with vinegar. Drop the vinegar on each mineral/rock If there is no reaction, scratch with a steel nail and re-add the vinegar to test for a reaction. Record your data for all the testing minerals Repeat steps 2-4 For all of your tests

7 Data Minerals Reaction with Vinegar Experiment. Minerals/rocks
Did they Fizz/React Did Powder Method work? Amethyst No Granite Graphite Calcite Yes Sandstone Quartz Limestone Pyrite(fools gold)

8 Conclusion What minerals react with vinegar?
The experiment was mainly negative, with only 2 minerals being positive for the test. The data explains how only Limestone and Calcite were the only positive minerals for the acidic test. My data does support my hypothesis of that if any mineral had acidic properties, that it would be Calcite. I learned that Calcite and Limestone have reactions with vinegar. My problems/Improvements I had was that it was hard trying to find which mineral was acidic and which was not. Improvements would be to add more vinegar, and buy new vinegar before the tests and or use a stronger acid.
