What is the fossil record?
The "fossil record" refers to the placement of fossils throughout the layers of sedimentary rock on Earth. We can learn what species lived during a specific geological period (era) and then changed in time. Typically, the older fossils are buried more deeply than younger ones. This is known as the law of superposition. Scientists use the placement of fossils as a guide for determining when life forms existed, and how they evolved.
