Objectives Increase understanding of the shifts of common core instruction Be able to better recognize common core instruction in the classroom Use knowledge of the shifts in common core to facilitate instructional support

Accessing Prior Knowledge
Consider what you know about the shifts in the Common Core State Standards. Quick Write Prompt: How would you know if a lesson you observed was common core aligned? (These will be collected.) Evidence cards of examples and non-examples. Model example/non-example of learning vocabulary. Participants must discuss and provide evidence why it is an example or non-example.

How would you know if a lesson you observed was common core aligned? DIRECTIONS: Discuss your thoughts with your table. On index cards identify both examples AND non-examples of content/instruction denoted by Common Core. Evidence cards of examples and non-examples. Model example/non-example of learning vocabulary. Participants discuss and provide evidence why it is an example or non-example.

Obstacles to Common Core-ification
Exemplary Instruction is the “how” of CCSS implementation! TABLE TALK What obstacles exist to aligning curricular and instructional practices to CCSS? Which of those obstacles do we have the ability to impact? How? Exemplary instruction is at the heart of implementing CCSS, and this is the biggest obstacle that we have the most control over.
