3. Coal Coal formation occurs in stages over millions of years:
Peat - 1st stage (not a form of coal)
- %water + %impurities > %carbon
- found near Earth’s surface
2. Lignite - 40% carbon
- layers of sediments deposited on top of peat causing heat and pressure
3. Bituminous Coal – 85% carbon
- more heat and pressure over time
4. Anthracite Coal – 95% carbon
- extreme heat and pressure
- most expensive
