1
PeopleSoft Continuous Delivery Model and the Impact on IT Organizations
Wayne Fuller July 18, 2018
2
About this Session Wanted to give people a chance to talk about continuous delivery and their successes or difficulties Wanted a session that was more about organization instead of about “how to” or sales Trying something new – less presentation and more time to hear from others Based on what I have heard from people felt it was overdue to talk about continuous delivery impact Discussion items after brief presentation – but session will flow based on your input

Wayne Fuller Bio Education Work Experience
B.S. in “I.T. Drivel” from Wosssamotta U. Doctorate in “Advanced Twaddle” from WRF College of Needadegreeforvalidity Work Experience 30 years PeopleSoft experience except for the years I didn’t work on PeopleSoft
4
The Past PeopleSoft was… Leading to an IT department that …
Slow to deliver new functionality Slow to resolve problems Difficult to keep up to date Extremely easy to customize Leading to an IT department that … Needed to fill gaps Needed to solve issues Treated the software like a homegrown product
5
The Present PeopleSoft now… Leading to an IT department that …
Delivers new functionality in a timely manner Gets fixes out quickly Is easy to keep up to date Extremely easy to customize Cloudlike Leading to an IT department that … Needs to apply regular maintenance Needs to understand delivered functionality Needs to communicate effectively with Oracle support Needs to limit customizations
6
Mindset Reset HR Systems are a commodity product
Value in policies not system (i.e. Benefits etc.) Only exception may be Recruiting and Payroll (but only if really, really bad with it) PeopleSoft 9.2 is a new product Not the old PeopleSoft Built to compete with Cloud vendors New maintenance schedule requires new ways to keep up to date New product implementation requires new processes to manage
7
Cloudlike New pages and functionality gives end of life to old ones
Fixes delivered frequently on a schedule Functionality delivered on a regular schedule IT needs to become a cloud provider Make sure up to date with product Take enhancement requests and determine ROI Prioritize on cost savings Ongoing reapplication costs Ongoing tools update costs Oracle will implement new features based on feedback
8
Continuous Delivery Initially touted as Selective Adoption
This only applied to new functionality Now we have “selective adoption” and “staying current” If organizations keep thinking of PS as it was (pre 9.2) then even staying current is a struggle Need to make sure there are pieces in place to analyze new functionality, keep track of configurations, and push modified parts of the organization back to vanilla Push back to vanilla may lose some modifications that aren’t really necessary New tools to refit those mods to make them less impactful
9
9.2 Is a New Product Not an upgrade because of the move to continuous delivery Need to think about “reimplementing” delivered functionality to get the best ROI Comparable to cloud products Similar in delivery of functionality Different in the ability to enhance
10
Questions? Anwers? What does IT do? What do business partners do?
Adapt or Fail Insist on staying current Partner with business on ROI of mods Become nimble and clever with testing Learn the product / understand enhancements Staffing needs change because model changes What do business partners do? Evaluate the cost of staying with PS Understand cloud applications Become true partners Heavy involvement with providing feedback to Oracle by both Different communities Suggestion boards

Discussion ]
12
Ground Rules Try to make your point succinctly (unlike me)
Be respectful of all ideas No right or wrong Dialog is important
13
Are HR Systems a commodity product?
Core Functionality common among all providers Does “Best of Breed” mean anything anymore?
14
Is PeopleSoft 9.2 a new product?
Should organizations look at some kind of reimplementation or push back to vanilla? Does Continuous Delivery make 9.2 different?
15
Is there a need for change in IT Organizations?
How does your organization work? Do you “stay current” and/or utilize “selective adoption”? Are you considering how IT interacts with customers?
