CPD opportunities Discussion Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting Introductions. The CPD discussion will be brief and will just review the requirements at a high level. Discussion is the most valuable part.

CPD Requirements Minimum of 100 hours over 24 months.
24 must be Structured. 12 Structured must be Technical. 4 hours of Professionalism. Hours must be relevant to your work. Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting Note that these are minimum requirements and most members will need to spend more than the minimum time to stay up to speed. Hours must be relevant to your area of practice.

CPD Requirements Structured are planned with more than one point of view. E.g. meetings, organized discussions, committee work. Unstructured is everything else. E.g. reading, research, preparing presentations. Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting

CPD Requirements Annual filing required.
Certain exemptions e.g. writing exams, not practising, working outside of Canada. Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting This year was the first year filings were required. Very high proportion of members filed. CIA worked with some members who did not fully meet the requirements. Some members did not meet the requirements for various meetings and it’s indicated on our website.

Educational Opportunities
Meetings. Seminars. Webcasts. Papers. Research. Publications. Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting Also other organizations provide continuing education. E.g. SOA. AAA, other professional organizations. Many companies have in-house education programs. Meeting attendance has been off. Economy, expense cuts, webcasts? Another session now to look at meetings and how to make them more valuable to members.

Discussion How can the CIA better provide continuing education to its members? Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting Discussion should focus on how the CIA can better provide ongoing education. To qualify as an actuary we are wrote exams and these exams provided our basic education to work as an actuary. After the exams we must continue to learn to keep up to speed. No exams once we’ve qualified so we must look elsewhere for our continuing education.

Discussion How do you get most of your continuing education?
Which methods are the most useful? Which are the least useful? What additional ways can the CIA provide continuing education? Should the CIA stop doing anything it’s currently doing? Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting

Discussion Is the cost of webcasts, especially for sole or smaller practitioners, an issue for those members getting structured CPD time? Assemblée générale 2009 2009 General Meeting E.g. a large company pays $225 and puts 20 people in a room. Small company pays $150 and has 2 people?
