Outcast United Chapter 1 Activity
Listen as I read the introduction and chapter 1 of the text. As I read, think about how Warren St. John used characterization to inform us about the type of person Luma is. Group Activity Based on the author’s description of Luma’s actions and interactions with the soccer team in the Introduction, complete the character trait graphic organizer. Independent Activity Respond to the following prompt: In chapter 1, Luma realizes that she had changed and could never fell comfortable living in Jordan again. Citing evidence from the text, explain why Luma would not feel comfortable living in Jordan after she had lived in America.

Read Silently Chapter 2 of the text, Beatrice and her Boys. As you read, think about how Mr. St. John uses characterization to describe Beatrice. How do her interactions shape her character? How does her behavior shape her character? Independent Activity Complete the character trait graphic organizer for Beatrice. Respond to the following prompt: After being robbed by a man with an African accent, Beatrice Ziaty lost hope that her family would be safe in their new home and became obsessed with protecting her boys. Writing from the perspective of Beatrice, write a letter from her to her boys explaining why she has become obsessed with protecting them. Remember to cite textual evidence to support Beatrice’s claim.
