What words spring to mind when you look at this image?
2-Jan-19 What words spring to mind when you look at this image? Obviously if you want to change the picture to a more local example please do. The idea is that we want to get students thinking about what is important to them about living here Students will probably list some of the things they see in the picture, which is fine Then ask them to say how it makes them feel and whether the responses are largely positive or negative- ask why 2

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world.
London is the capital and most populated city in the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for over two thousand years, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London has a wide range of people and culture, and more than 300 languages are spoken within Greater London. The Greater London Authority currently estimated its population to be 8.6 million, making it the largest city in the European Union, and accounting for 12.5 per cent of the UK population. London is one of the most diverse cities in the world. From Wikipedia It’s wordy and you may want to change it. The idea though is to get students thinking about how London is so diverse and why that is viewed by many as being a really strong point about living here. It’s diverse and therefore for many people exciting. You could talk about the variety of food, music, religions, languages spoken etc.

Racist words are still used by some people
Freshy Chav Have you heard these words before? Have you ever used them? Have you ever been called anything racist? What do you think a religious leader would say if they heard people using these words? If you aren’t comfortable with these words replace them or choose words that you think the students are more likely to have overheard. You might want students to write words they’ve heard on a post-it and then collect them in and discuss one’s you’re happy to discuss, this might be better than getting students to say things which might offend others.
