4. Northern economy vs. Southern economy
In the U.S., slavery expanded in the South rather than in the North because geographic conditions in the South supported large plantations.

5. As the U.S. expanded westward by acquiring more land during the 1800s, controversy over these territories focused on the extension of slavery.

6. Southerners wanted slavery extended to the western territories in order to keep enough strength in the Senate to protect Southern interests.

8. 1. Missouri Compromise (of 1820): banned slavery north of 36°30’ line.

9. 2. Compromise of 1850: created five separate laws aimed at favoring both Northern and Southern interests.
