1 Welcome! April 5rd, 2016 Wednesday
Do Now Find your seats. Write the date at the top of a new page in your journal. Once the bell rings, begin the freewrite. Prompt: “I never would have married you if I'd have known…” (Write a story that includes the dialogue above!)

2 Characterization: Langston Hughes
Today, we’re reading “Thank You Ma’am,” a short story from Langston Hughes, an author from the Harlem Renaissance. One of the things Hughes does really well in this piece is characterization. Though the entire piece is only a short glimpse into two character’s lives, we get a very clear picture of who they are as people. As we read, feel free to mark any passage that tells you something important about either Roger (the boy) or Mrs. Jones – we’ll use them later!

3 Character Analysis 1. Write a brief character analysis for either Roger or Mrs. Jones (4-5 sentences). What sticks out to you about his/her personality? Identify at least two characteristics for your chosen character, and provide at least one piece of textual support for each characteristic – how do you know?

4 “Thank you Ma’am” Short FIlm
Watch the short film interpretation of “Thank You Ma’am,” paying close attention to the character you chose for your analysis. 2. Write an analysis: What is different about your character in the film? What is the same? Be sure to reference at least two moments from the film in your response.

5 “Thank you Ma’am” Characterization Practice
3. Though the story ends with “he never saw her again,” what if Roger did see Mrs. Jones again? Write a story that takes place after this one about Roger and Mrs. Jones meeting one more time (how far in the future is up to you). Most importantly, be sure to keep their characters consistent with Hughes’. How has each character changed since their first meeting? How have they stayed the same? As usual, write at least one page for full credit 
