Warm Up 9/26 Let’s talk about writing! Respond to the questions below:
What do you like about writing in general? What difficulties do you frequently face when given a writing assignment? How do you see yourself as a student writer? Are you as effective as you’d like to be? Is this a strength of yours, a struggle, or both?

Learning Targets I can work on writing a body paragraph about a theme word of my choice in order to practice my writing skills.

Goal: Careful, Purposeful, Analytical Writing
Prewriting work – 5 minutes. Go back to your Quick Write from yesterday. If you like it, use that theme word! If not, look at what you did to examine the theme word in the chapters we read so far, and then pick a new theme word (Identity, Social Roles, Ambition, Color). Once you’ve selected a theme word, narrow it down: pick ONE COMMENT that the author is making in regards to your chosen theme work (lean on the group work from yesterday if need be). Find a quote to support (you can use one from yesterday). Make sure it’s the best one you can think of.

Now, WRITE Start with a topic sentence.
Use this format (especially what is indicated under analysis): (20 minutes) Start with a topic sentence. Introduce quote: identify both the speaker AND the context in which the quote is said. Provide as much detail as someone would need if they have read the book, but it’s been a minute. Provide the quotation Analyze the quotation: Paraphrase (what is the quote saying?) Explain how it supports your topic sentence. Find anything you can use to support this. You can use the following: Identification of quest, allusion, or reference to the meaning behind any violence occurring in the context. Identification of character development Identification/use of literary devices

Peer Reflection Read each other’s paragraphs. Then, in your journals, answer the following: 1. What did my partner do well? 2. What did I do well? 3. What can I learn from my partner’s work? 4. Does my work (or my partner’s work) get to the level of depth in analysis that is necessary for this assignment? If not, what can I do specifically to assist in this area? Remember: Feedback is Specific, Prescriptive, and Supportive.
