3 OBJECTIVE To understand the purpose of Water Baptism.

4 INTRODUCTION Baptism is an important event in the believer's walk with Jesus Christ The First Step: Coming to know Christ and Accepting Him as personal Lord and Saviour is the most significant step anyone can take while still alive. This is the New Birth! At the moment of salvation, Christ comes and indwells the new believer and a wonderful, eternal journey begins.

5 INTRODUCTION The Next Step:
After the Salvation experience, the new believer needs to publicly demonstrate his or her new status in Christ Jesus! Water Baptism provides that unique opportunity for the new believer to publicly demonstrates his or her inner conviction about Christ as the saviour to the world around…

6 What is Water baptism?

7 It is the outward demonstration of the inner belief.
Water baptism is the immersion of a believer in water, symbolizing believer's new life in Christ and testifying to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. New Testament baptism is always by immersion and only conducted after one's profession of faith in Christ.

8 SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE ON WATER BAPTISM
Rom 6:3-5 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. KJV

9 WHY A NEW BELIEVER NEEDS TO UNDER GO WATER BAPTISM

10 It’s in Obedience to Jesus' command and example
The Command: Matt 28:19 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: The Example Matt 3:13-15 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. KJV

11 2. Baptism Expresses Union with Christ
Romans 6:3-4 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. In baptism, by faith, we are united with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection. Baptism dramatically portrays what happened spiritually when you received Christ: Your old self of unbelief and rebellion and idolatry died, and a new you of faith and submission and treasuring Christ came into being. That’s what you confess to the world and to heaven when you are baptized.

12 Baptism Is for Believers Only
Baptism is an expression of faith and therefore only for believers. It is an ordinance of the Lord by which those who have repented and come to faith express their union with Christ in His death and resurrection. So our understanding of the New Testament is that the meaning of baptism includes the fact that it is an expression of the faith of the one being baptized. It is not something that an unbeliever can do. It is not something that an infant can do. That is why we don’t baptize infants. The order is always the preaching of the gospel; faith in the gospel; then baptism. Acts 2:41; 8:12; 8:36-38; 16:30-34; 18:8.

13 HOW WATER BAPTISM IS TO BE DONE

14 The word Baptism is the English form of the Greek word “BAPTIZO” which means to Immerse in water.
The scripture clearly teaches baptism is by immersion in water and that’s the way it’s to be done! Baptism is to be done in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That’s what Jesus said in Matthew 28:19: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This means that not just any immersing is baptism. When we call on their name, we say that this act is because of them and by them and for them.

15 3. The New testament believers were baptized before witnesses
3. The New testament believers were baptized before witnesses. Baptism is not a private ceremony but a public display of believers’ commitment to Christ. Example Acts 8:12 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. NKJV
