1
Cell History van Leeuwenhoek Hooke
2
Leeuwenhoek Made first microscope
Observed tiny creatures that moved-he called them “Animicules”- now known as bacteria
3
Cell History All life is made of cells
Discovered after microscope invented 1665: Robert Hooke first observed cork (dead plant bark) Cork reminded him of tiny rooms He named the empty boxes “cells”
4
CELLS The Invention of the microscope made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells
5
Cell Theory Schleiden Schwann Virchow Three Parts:
1) All organisms are made of one or more cells 2) Cells are the basic unit of structure and function 3) All Cells come from cells that already exist. What’s the big problem with this theory? Schwann Virchow
6
Schleiden 1838-Concluded that all plants are made up of cells
7
Schwann 1855-concluded that all animals are made up of cells
8
Virchow Concluded that all cells come from other cells
9
Cell Categories 1) Prokaryote: Pro-Before Karyote-nucleus
No membrane around nucleus Oldest cells known (~4 billion years old) Believed to have evolved first (oldest fossils) AKA: Bacteria
10
Cell Categories 2) Eukaryote: Cells with a nucleus & membrane bound organelles Have a membrane around the nucleus More complex cells Evolved from prokaryotes Ex: Protists, Fungi, Plants, Animals
11
How are living things organized?
Living things are organized into one of 6 kingdoms. A Kingdom is a large group that shares some similar characteristics The 6 Kingdoms are: Archeobacteria Eubacteria Protists Fungi Plants Animals
12
Quick Review Cells shape is related to its job (function)
Cells are the basic units of life Cells come from other cells
