Science Starter Begin following Layers of the Earth Directions, skip #1 and begin with #2. Examples of how your cut out should look.

Earth’s Interior Identify the characteristics of Earth’s crust, mantle, and core. Describe how temperature and pressure change inside the Earth.

How Geologist study the Earth’s Interior
Geologist use two ways to study the Earth’s Interior 1. Direct evidence from rock samples from drilled holes and volcanoes 2. Indirect evidence from seismic waves as a result of an earthquake.

Seismic Waves Energy travels through the earth and is recorded to study the structure of the planet

Layers of the Earth The three main layers of Earth are the crust, mantle, and the core. The layers differ in size, composition, temperature, and pressure.

The Crust The crust is the outer layer of solid rock including dry land and the ocean floor. Continental crust is made up of a light colored rock and has coarse grains called granite. Oceanic crust is made up of dark, fine-grained rock called basalt.

The Mantle The mantle is made of very hot, solid rock.
The mantle is divided into three different layers. Lithosphere – brittle, strong, hard, and rigid Asthenosphere – soft, less rigid rock that can bend Mesosphere – hot but more rigid

The Core The core is made mostly of metals iron and nickel. There are two parts 1. Inner outer core 2. Solid inner core Outer core is layer or motel metal that surrounds the inner core. Inner core is a dense ball of solid metal.

Now for a song…
