Types of Bridges The six main types of bridges are: beam bridge
cantilever bridge arch bridge suspension bridge cable-stayed bridge truss bridge

Beam Bridge Beam bridges are the simplest structural forms for bridge spans supported by an abutment or pier at each end. No moments are transferred throughout the support, hence their structural type is known as simply supported. Draw diagram

Cantilever bridge is a bridge whose main elements are cantilevers: structures that are anchored at only one end while the other projects horizontally into space. Cantilever Bridge Draw diagram

An arch bridge is a bridge with abutments at each end shaped as a curved arch. Arch bridges work by transferring the weight of the bridge and its loads partially into a horizontal thrust restrained by the abutments at either side. abutment refers to the substructure at the ends of a bridge span or dam whereon the structure's superstructure rests or contacts Arch Bridge Draw

suspension bridge a bridge in which the weight of the deck is supported by vertical cables suspended from larger cables that run between towers and are anchored in abutments at each end. Draw

cable-stayed bridge a bridge in which the weight of the deck is supported by a number of cables running directly to one or more towers. Draw

truss bridge A truss bridge is a bridge whose load-bearing superstructure is composed of a truss. This truss is a structure of connected elements forming triangular units. The connected elements may be stressed from tension, compression, or sometimes both in response to dynamic loads. Truss bridges are one of the oldest types of modern bridges. Draw
