2 Jethro Tull Jethro Tull -gentlemen farmer. Thought scattering seeds over a large area was wasteful so he invented a seed drill which planted seeds in regular rows. He saw that crops grew better if he aerated the soil and removed the weeds. Invented a horse-drawn cultivator to do the work.

3 Charles Townshend He was a farmer.
Farmers traditionally left part of the fields unplanted each year to allow nutrients to return to the soil. Found that alternating different kinds of crops would preserve soil fertility instead of leaving some fields unplanted. Created the system called crop rotation. This system is still used today.

4 Robert Ransome American blacksmith.
He invented an iron plow in 3 parts so a farmer could replace a broken part instead of buying a new plow if something broke.

5 Key Terms and Definitions
Enclosure movement-when farmers enclosed communal farm lands into individual holdings for large-scale farming. Crop rotation-alternating different kinds of crops each year to preserve soil fertility. “Gentlemen farmers”-farmers who were the first to experiment in the 1700s

6 Advancements Machines:
Seed drill- made it possible to plant seed in regular rows Easier to remove weeds Broke up the soil between the rows of plants Horse-drawn cultivator- did the removing process for the weed and soil. The process went faster and less work was included into the whole process. Iron plows- made up of three parts; easier to replace broken parts with lower costs. Before this advancement, many farmers had to buy a new plow, which came high costs. Systems: Crop rotation- When one alternates different crops to preserve soil fertility. Crop rotation is the basic principle for modern farming.

7 Predictions on Great Britain…
With these great agricultural accomplishments, [we predict] agriculture will be a booming business in Great Britain. Farmers here will be able to grow many more crops much faster with their new tools and techniques. Big agricultural landowners will grow very wealthy. Small landowners who decide to continue farming can eventually expand and earn enough to use these new tools, or they will move to the city to find different lines of work. With no lack of food, people in society will have the chance to invent new things and start new businesses. Industries that depend on agriculture will expand. Cities will grow bigger and Great Britain’s economy will expand.

8 How Will It Spread & Impact Other Countries?
Once people see how farmers with these new tools and techniques can grow crops faster and in greater numbers, they will want to use those new inventions. The new techniques and tools will become widespread among Great Britain’s farmers. Once people from other countries travel to Britain or farmers in Britain leave for different countries, they will also use the new inventions. Other countries will also grow economically and will produce more agricultural goods than ever before People in other countries might even come up with better ideas on how to improve the agricultural industry

9 Most Important Factor of the Industrial Revolution.
Agriculture gave people food, cloth, etc. Without these necessities people would not be able to survive. New methods and technologies only increased the amount of goods made/grown. Agriculture was one of the hardest jobs because it was such tedious work (for example, cotton). The invention of new machines made it easier and less work for people on the farms. Agriculture decreased the amount of farm laborers. Since not as many workers were needed in the agriculture industry, many workers moved into cities and worked on new inventions, machines, and in new industries.
