2 European Scramble for Africa
Dr. Livingston Explored Congo Valley for Europe King Leopold of Belgium sent a mission into the interior of Congo to establish trade relations with local tribes. This set a scramble for Africa by European powers

3 Berlin Conference and African Colonization
European powers gathered in Berlin in 1884 to decide about Africa. Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Spain decide to divide among themselves. No African countries were invited. Africans were simply ignored. By 1920 only Ethiopia was free in Africa

4 Division of Africa among Colonial Powers
Britain and France Divided West Africa among them North Africa was mainly colonized by France, Italy and Spain East Africa was colonized by Britain and Germany Central Africa was colonized by Belgium and France.

5 Southern Africa was first colonized by the Dutch and then by the British.

6 Colonization of Southern Africa
The Zulu People had an Empire in Southern Africa It became strong under the Leadership of King Shaka [Shakazulu]. The Dutch farmers called Boers arrived in Southern Africa during the 1600s. They had created a colony in the Cape of Good Hope – Cape Town. They also came to be known as Afrikaners.

7 The Boers gradually moved north and came into conflict with Zulus.
In the 1800s British took over Cape Town, forcing the Boers to move further North. Boers created a few republics [the Boer Republics]. British governor of Cape Colony Cecil Rhodes wanted to take over the Boer Republics, which triggered a war between the British and the Dutch Farmers – Boer War. British won the war and Union of South Africa was created.
